Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award

Manchester Art Gallery Makes the List!

Manchester Art Gallery has been shorlisted for the 2008 Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award.

Hundreds of families from across the UK have been sending in their nominations for the best family friendly museum around. All these entries have now been whittled down to a list of the top five by a panel of esteemed judges: Liz Forgan (Chair, Heritage Lottery Fund and the Scott Trust), Mark Taylor (Director, Museums Association), Anra Kennedy (Head of Learning, Culture24) Melissa Denes (Arts Editor, Guardian) and Mark Brown (Arts Correspondent, Guardian).

Manchester Art Gallery is the first venue in Manchester to be shorlisted for the prestigious award and it is a fantastic recognition of their efforts to welcome and provide for families. The gallery holds regular family activities, including a family art club on the first Saturday of every month, and has a wide selection of special facilities for families, including family friendly audioguides and backpacks.

The other shortlisted museums were:

Dulwich Picture Gallery
Shetland Museum
Weston Park Museum, Sheffield
Wolverhampton Art Gallery

The shortlisted museums will now be visited by families, unannounced, who will road test them against the Kids in Museums Manifesto. The winner will be announced in the Guardian on Thursday 1 May.

The Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award is now in its fourth year and is run in conjunction with Kids in Museums and The Guardian newspaper.
